Getting Ready for Spring School Holidays: Travel-Friendly Toys for Kiwi Families
Share
The spring school holidays are almost here β New Zealand schools break up from Saturday 26 September to Sunday 11 October 2026 β and for many whΔnau that means road trips, flights, or long days out and about. Packing the right toys can make all the difference between a peaceful drive and a restless one.
Whether you're after educational toys NZ parents can rely on, browsing educational toys New Zealand wide for something new, or just want compact, travel-friendly picks for the tamariki, here's a BubsKart round-up to help you pack smart this spring.
1. Learn Letters on the Go
Small, light, and easy to slip into a bag, the A-B-C Alphabet Learning Book for Kids is a simple way to build early literacy wherever you are β a solid pick among educational toys for 2 year olds NZ parents look for as a first learning book.
2. Counting on the Road
Long drives are the perfect time to practise numbers. The Numbers in English 1β100 Book for Kids keeps tamariki engaged with counting practice, whether you're driving to Rotorua or flying to visit whΔnau.
3. Mess-Free Drawing on the Move
For a paper-free way to doodle, the LCD Picture Book for Kids β Copy, Draw and Learn is compact, reusable, and mess-free β a favourite among educational toys for 3 year olds NZ parents pack for holidays, with no crayons rolling around the back seat.
4. A Reusable Writing Tablet for Road Trips
Pairing well with the picture book, the LCD Writing Tablet β Animal Design gives tamariki a reusable drawing screen with a one-touch erase button β no apps, no videos, just simple doodling that's ideal for flights, ferries, or the back seat.
5. Magic Water Colouring Without the Mess
Skip the paint pots entirely. The Magic Water Book Reusable Colouring Book uses nothing but a water-filled pen to reveal colourful pictures β lightweight, spill-free, and perfect for cafΓ©s, planes, or waiting rooms during the break.
6. A Talking Pen for Quiet Learning Time
The Smart Robot Talking Pen reads words, phrases, and stories aloud when touched to its compatible books, making it an engaging, screen-free companion for tamariki aged 3 and up on longer journeys.
7. Logic Games Without the Screen
Designed with no electronic screen at all, the Interactive Logic Pad Learning Board packs 126 logic games into a lightweight, carry-handle case β a great fit among educational toys for 4 year olds NZ families choose for keeping little minds busy on the go.
8. Touch-and-Learn Reading Fun
The Interactive Touch Reading Learning Machine combines touch-and-learn cards with phonics, songs, and nursery rhymes β light, portable, and suited to educational toys for 5 year olds NZ parents want for early reading practice while travelling.
9. A Busy Book for Every Bag
Perhaps the most pack-friendly option of all, the Montessori Learning Busy Book folds flat, reuses its Velcro activity pieces again and again, and covers numbers, letters, colours, and matching games β ideal for pΔpi and tamariki alike on any trip.
Packing Tips for the Holidays
A few things to keep in mind when packing for the spring break:
- Choose reusable, battery-light options where you can β fewer chargers, less stress
- Pack a small pouch for loose pieces (busy book pieces, logic cards) so nothing goes missing
- Rotate 2β3 toys through the trip rather than packing everything at once, to keep things fresh
